Job Classification and Recruitment Details

This classification has been designated as a non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position.

This recruitment will be used to fill one project-funded, at-will vacancy and to establish a list for potential future vacancies, including full-time classified and/or project-funded at-will positions.

Hiring Bonus

The Energy Resources Department offers a hiring bonus of $4,200 for newly hired Utility Service Workers, payable after successful completion of the initial probation period, contingent upon a satisfactory performance evaluation.

Position Overview

The Utility Service Worker is a trainee role focused on learning to perform specialized utility work, including maintaining, installing, and repairing gas services, investigating customer complaints, and identifying gas operating conditions through on-the-job training. Responsibilities increase in scope as training progresses, and incumbents are expected to exercise good judgment in responding to routine and emergency gas requests, often under adverse weather and hazardous conditions. Safety procedures and equipment are mandatory, and overtime may be required.

Supervision and Progression

The class is supervised by a Utility Service Field Supervisor. Successful trainees may be promoted to Utility Service Specialist through non-competitive criteria after completing coursework, training, and performance assessments.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in maintenance, installation, or repair of natural gas utility; OR one year of experience in natural gas systems, plumbing, pipe fitting, or CNG equipment; AND one year of general field construction work.

Special Requirements

• SCBA certification within three months of hire.
• Medical evaluation and certification to wear a respirator.
• Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License.
• City operator qualification within six months.
• Residency within 18 miles of the assigned station within one year of hire.

Substance Abuse Testing

This position is subject to DOT/PHMSA drug and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Supplemental courses in utility construction or technology.
• 6 months to 1 year of computer experience.
