Job description

NOTICE: INTERNAL POSTING

ONLY CURRENT CITY OF HAMILTON EMPLOYEES WHO ARE IUOE, LOCAL 20 MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY. ALL OTHER APPLICANTS WILL BE REJECTED.

This position involves filling both regular and short-notice vacancies across all Operational classes within the Water Production Division. When not covering a vacancy, the Relief Operator will work with Maintenance or the Administrative Group, as directed by Division Management. The typical schedule when not covering is 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, and when covering, hours are either 6:00 am - 6:00 pm or 6:00 pm - 6:00 am.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain water treatment plant machinery and equipment, including control of plant operations, supervision of plant processes, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Monitor plant systems, take readings, and maintain operational records.
  • Supervise work of others, plan and schedule tasks, and ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Handle chemicals, including lifting chemical bags weighing approximately 60 pounds, and operate chemical feed equipment.
  • Collect water samples for testing, analyze water quality, and adjust treatment processes accordingly.
  • Operate and control pumps, valves, filters, and other plant equipment to ensure water quality and supply.
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on plant machinery.
  • Maintain detailed logs of operations and system activities.
  • Work on various maintenance assignments as needed.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to handle multiple projects, solve complex problems, and work independently.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of water treatment principles, equipment operation, and safety practices.
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical systems used in water treatment facilities.
  • Ability to perform chemical calculations and interpret measurement data.
  • Must pass a color acuity test for sample analysis.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D., and pass a Class I Water Supply Operator certification test within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a Class I, II, or III Water Supply Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State of Ohio EPA.
