Work Schedule

12 hr shift, 3-4 days a week, 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM or 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM - May vary based on organizational needs.

Position Overview

Join NC State University as a Utility Plant Operator to ensure the reliable operation of central utility systems, including electrical generation, steam, hot water, and chilled water systems. Operate and maintain equipment such as turbines, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and water treatment systems. Bring your technical expertise and operational commitment to keep the university running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Control and monitor steam boilers, chillers, cogeneration equipment, and auxiliary systems.
  • Maintain safe and efficient operations of utility production systems.
  • Conduct real-time monitoring, make adjustments, and ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.
  • Inspect and maintain plant equipment such as compressors, filters, pumps, and towers.
  • Work under supervision to optimize plant performance and resolve operational issues.
  • Operate the Cates Cogeneration Facility to produce electricity and steam for the campus.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of related experience, or equivalent training and experience. Maintain required certifications.

Additional Qualifications: Effective verbal communication with supervisors and the public, understanding verbal and written instructions, ability to lift up to 60 pounds with accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with combustion turbines/cogeneration.
  • Experience in steam production and water tube boilers up to 100kpph.
  • Experience in chilled water production up to 2000 tons.
  • Experience in a central plant environment.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • North Carolina Driver’s License within 60 days of hire and maintained.
