Job summary

City of Denison seeks a skilled maintenance technician to develop and sustain mechanical and electrical equipment across water and wastewater facilities. You will maintain pumps, motors, valves, and pumps, fabricate parts, perform piping work, and operate mechanical and welding tools in a demanding industrial setting.

The role requires at least a year of relevant experience, a high school diploma, and the ability to read technical manuals and keep precise records.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, and related systems at water and wastewater facilities.
  • Fabricate parts and assemblies; analyze failures; align units using drawings and specs.
  • Perform plumbing and piping work; assist design and layout of piping projects; test leaks.
  • Set up rigging to move heavy equipment and operate cranes, lifts, and other gear.
  • Operate tools and welding equipment; use precision measuring devices and metalworking machines.
  • Service, repair, and apply coatings to equipment and pipelines; enter data in maintenance systems.
  • Perform confined space entry procedures and safety checks; assist with procedures as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job description

To perform or assist in the development and construction of new equipment systems and maintenance, repair, and or replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment employed in the operation of water and wastewater treatment, pumping, and storage facilities.

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competence and satisfactory performance of these duties. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Performs comprehensive preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance on a variety of equipment and systems at water and wastewater facilities including, but not limited to, pumps, motors, valves, sluice gates, compressors, gearboxes, power transmission equipment, engines, and other specialized treatment systems.
  2. Fabricates parts and fittings, including use of close tolerance machining; analyzes part failure/malfunction; makes assemblies, repairs, and aligns units used in maintenance work from work order, drawings, specifications, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  3. Performs plumbing and pipe work, primarily in an industrial setting, including troubleshooting and performing repairs; assists in the design and layout of new piping projects and constructs the pipe assembly and performs leakage tests of water, wastewater, and chemical systems.
  4. Sets up and operates necessary rigging equipment to move or place heavy equipment in repair and installation work.
  5. Operates a variety of equipment while engaged in mechanical maintenance work such as mobile cranes, scissor lifts, aerial lifts, skid-steer, back-hoe, excavator, and tractors.
  6. Operates a computerized maintenance management system for record keeping and to access pertinent information; identifies and communicates need for supplies, reorders supplies; assists with development of maintenance procedures; reports and/or corrects unsafe working conditions.
  7. Operates, monitors, and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment.; uses precision measuring instruments, such as, height and depth gauges, calipers, verniers, and micrometers of various types; operates metalworking equipment such as, lathe, mill, band saw, grinders, drill and hydraulic presses, pipe threaders, gas or arc welders (MIG, TIG and SMAW), and plasma cutters.
  8. Services, repairs, and applies industrial coatings to equipment, machinery, structures, pipelines, and related appurtenances.
  9. Performs permit and certificate of safe confined space entry.
  10. All other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Considerable knowledge in the methods, tools, and materials used in the development, construction, corrective and preventive maintenance of mechanical and electrical circuit equipment employed in the operation of water and wastewater treatment, pumping and storage facilities.
  2. Ability to safely perform varied mechanical skills, including gas and/or arc welding.
  3. Ability to interpret technical manuals and keep accurate records.
  4. Ability to demonstrate aptitude in practical mathematics.
  5. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions and communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  6. Ability to successfully coordinate work with and assistance of City staff, consultants, and contractors
  7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  8. Ability to read and understand engineering plans and speci?cations
  9. Ability to maintain consistent attendance.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have valid driver’s license at time of placement and must have driving record su?cient for coverage by City’s auto liability carrier
  • One year experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment in a water and or wastewater treatment plant; or in an industrial environment installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment such as pumps, motors, power transmission equipment, engines, boilers, piping, electrical, and valves.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Additional technical school or college-level course work related to plant mechanics is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a TCEQ Water and or Wastewater license.
