Qualifications

Utility Person – 3rd Shift- City Utilities – Field Operations 11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. | Required on-call rotation

What You'll Do

As a Utility Person, you will perform skilled and general labor to help maintain and restore the City's water, sewer, and stormwater systems. This position involves outdoor physical work, heavy equipment operation, construction, and emergency response.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy trucks, front-end loaders, haul equipment, power tools, and other construction equipment.
  • Install and repair water mains, services, hydrants, valves, curb boxes, and new taps.
  • Install and repair sewer and stormwater mains, laterals, culverts, manholes, inlets, catch basins, ditches, and swales.
  • Excavate and expose buried utilities; form, pour, and finish concrete and complete temporary or permanent asphalt repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas while following all safety procedures.
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to perform heavy, strenuous physical work in changing weather and demanding field conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, machinery, and construction equipment.
  • Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to use mobile work-order and GIS systems.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and public-service skills.
  • Three years of utility construction experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Indiana driver's license.
  • New employees must have a Class A CDL learner's permit upon hire and obtain a full Class A CDL within 180 days.
  • Existing employees must possess and maintain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement.
  • Excavation and Trench Competent Person certification must be obtained within 90 days.
  • Confined Space Competent Person certification must be obtained within 90 days.
Work Environment

This position works outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve wet or humid environments, loud noise, moving equipment, airborne particles, confined spaces, and physically demanding construction activities. Required safety equipment and hearing protection must be worn as directed.
