Responsibility for performing unskilled to semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair and construction of the municipal water distribution, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems. Work is performed under the general direction of the Utility Foreman.
- Assists in maintaining and repairing the water, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems to achieve efficient operations; may respond to emergency calls for service as required.
- Assists in inspecting and cleaning sewer lines to ensure proper flow.
- Assists in repairing, replacing and installing fire hydrants and valves for proper performance and efficiency.
- Assists in turn-ons and shut offs of water service and mains in order to perform repairs and maintenance.
- Operates video equipment used to inspect existing and new sanitary sewer and storm drain lines for proper flow and condition rating.

- One year of experience in water and sewer system repair and maintenance desirable.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONSPossession of a valid Montana commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain one within six months of hiring.
- Basic knowledge of water and sewer distribution systems and appropriate repair and maintenance methods.
- Basic knowledge of the city codes regarding water and sewer services.
- Ability to respond to emergency calls and to quickly determine necessary actions to address the specific situation.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and the general public.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITYThis position does not supervise staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENTWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to rain, snow, cold, heat, noise, confining workspace, moving traffic and mechanical hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, twist, bend, crawl, kneel, reach, grasp, push, pull, ride and perform similar body movements. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. When over 50 pounds employees are encouraged to use a team lift; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate hand and power tools, various maintenance and repair equipment, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone and two-way radio; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORKThe work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Must be available for call-out work.
TRAVELTravel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
