Job summary

Town of Herndon is seeking a semi-skilled, manual laborer to perform construction, repair and maintenance tasks, including grounds care, irrigation repairs and operation of grounds equipment. The role supports other divisions as needed and may involve emergencies.

Duties include mowing, planting, tree and shrub work, setting up work zones, flagging traffic, snow/ice removal and assisting at special events. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and possess a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to obtain flagger certification within six months.
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable record.

Responsibilities

• Maintains town grounds using riding and manual lawn mowers, leaf blowers and related equipment.
• Assists in tree removal, collects debris and roadside trash, and maintains town sports fields.
• Performs routine maintenance on town trucks and equipment and transports them to sites.
• Sets up work zones and flags traffic during road and rights-of-way maintenance.
• Goes to town special events, sets up/breaks down as required.
• Performs snow and ice removal for the town as needed.
• Supports other operations/divisions as needed.

Job description

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, manual labor in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments, such as but not limited to maintaining town grounds, repairing irrigation lines and operating grounds equipment. The position will support other operations/divisions as needed, or in emergency cases, including but not limited to streets, facilities, and trash collection.

Duties and Responsibilities

• 1. Maintains town grounds using such equipment as riding and manual lawn mowers, leaf blowers; waters grass, flower beds and other landscape; maintains shrubbery and trees; plants flowers; spreads seed and fertilizer; repairs irrigation lines; maintains and renovates town sports fields.
• 2. Assists in town owned tree removal; collects fallen leaves; gathers debris; collects roadside trash; spreads gravel or stone as needed.
• 3. Performs general maintenance work and daily preventative maintenance on town trucks and equipment; drives equipment to and from maintenance sites.
• 4. Sets up work zones according to standards; flags traffic during road and rights-of-way maintenance.
• 5. Sets up and breaks down for town special events; works at town special events as required.
• 6. Performs snow and ice removal for town, as needed
• 7. Supports other operations/divisions as needed.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Requirements

Duties involve the ability to exert heavy, physical effort, and involves some lifting, carrying, pushing, climbing, crouching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling up to approximately 100 pounds. Duties may also require coordinated movements to operate different types of equipment and vehicles. Duties may also require adequate visual perception, as well as adequate oral communications abilities.

Duties may risk exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, animal pests, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, loud machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.
