Job description

Job Title: Utility Maintenance Worker

Starting Salary: $34,985.18 - $42,856.85 annually

Under the supervision of the Utility Foreman, this position performs maintenance, repair, and installation work on city-owned facilities and utilities.

Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain, install, repair, replace, and connect/disconnect utility services, water meters, and sewer and water lines.
  2. Monitor equipment operators to prevent damage to utility lines during digging operations.
  3. Set up traffic barricades, signage, and cones.
  4. Organize tools, equipment, and supplies for assignments.
  5. Inspect, clean, and maintain equipment and tools for safe operation.
  6. Perform routine inspections to identify repairs or hazards.
  7. Clean work sites and replace landscaping as needed.
  8. Provide backup support and on-call assistance to other departments.
  9. Travel to meetings and training sessions.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in general maintenance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of water and sewer maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Ability to operate light equipment, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safe handling of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions and safety practices, and perform multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with PC, tablets, and software such as Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are required.
Special Requirements:
  • Mobility in outdoor and field environments.
  • On-call availability during non-working hours and severe weather events.
  • Position is regulated under DOT, requiring random drug and alcohol testing.
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Water Class D (Distribution) and/or Wastewater Class D (Collections I) license required or to be obtained within one year.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; Class A CDL required or to be obtained within six months.
Work Environment:

Outdoor work with exposure to weather, noise, dust, chemicals, and mechanical hazards. Physical demands include lifting up to 80 lbs., occasional pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs., and repetitive motions. Work may involve climbing, kneeling, squatting, and working in confined spaces. Extended periods of physical activity are expected.
