Job summary

Port of Morrow is seeking a field technician to locate and mark underground utility infrastructure and read utility meters for accurate billing and maintenance. You will respond to locate requests, operate locating equipment, and maintain records and maps while working outdoors in varying weather.

Daily duties include inspecting meters and related equipment, communicating with contractors, and supporting emergency responses.

Job description

General Position Summary:

• Responsible for locating and marking underground utility infrastructure to prevent damage during excavation activities and accurately reading water meters for billing, maintenance, and operational purposes. Ensures compliance with safety regulations, maintains records, and supports utility operations.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

• Locate and mark underground utility infrastructure.
• Respond to utility locate requests within required timeframes.
• Read and record utility meter data accurately.
• Inspect meters, meter boxes, and related equipment for damage or leaks.
• Maintain accurate records, logs, maps, and reports.
• Utilize locating equipment including electromagnetic locators and GPS devices.
• Assist with utility maintenance, repairs, and emergency response activities.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions and damaged utilities.
• Communicate with contractors, customers, and utility personnel.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools as required.
• Perform all duties in conformance with company safety standards and applicable regulations.

Supervisory Responsibility:

• Job has no supervisory responsibility.

Specific Job Skills:

• Knowledge of underground utility locating procedures and equipment.
• Ability to read utility maps and construction drawings.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to operate GPS, tablets, and data collection devices.
• Ability to work independently.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen

Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum one (1) year of underground utility locating experience required.
• Experience reading utility meters preferred.
• CDL preferred.

Job Conditions:

• Employees regularly work outdoors and may be exposed to traffic, construction activity, noise, dust, weather extremes, and uneven terrain.
