About the Role

Utility Location Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and accurate identification of underground utility lines prior to excavation or construction activities. This position is responsible for leading field operations to locate, mark, and document utility infrastructure, thereby preventing damage to essential services and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The role requires collaboration with utility companies, contractors, and regulatory bodies to coordinate and communicate location efforts effectively. This position contributes to the protection of public safety and infrastructure integrity within the service area.

Job Functions

• Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
• Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
• Operate different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark under‑ground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
• Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to all locates completed.
• Be able to perform manhole/handhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.
• Perform work in all weather conditions.
• Requires broad based knowledge of all phases of private locating, Pre‑design locating, Subsurface Utility Engineering.
• Assists in providing insight into identifying and utilizing correct technology, equipment and tools needed for the department.
• Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.
• Receive and respond to excavation notices in accordance with established time requirements.
• Follow all safety rules.
• This position requires Subcontractor locator to use personal vehicle and fuel.
