Job summary

SCtennis is seeking a Utility Locator in Newberry, SC to mark underground utilities for construction projects. Reports to the Assistant to the Utility Director in Utilities Administration. FLSA: Non-Exempt. Date Effective: August 2026.

The role involves locating water, sewer, electrical, and fiber lines and updating records; requires strong communication with city departments and residents. Typical hours are 7 am–5 pm, Monday–Thursday, with emergency response as needed.

• Communicates with consumers/citizens in regard to utility locates needed from contractors or homeowners.

Job Summary

The utility locator marks the location of underground utilities for construction activities requiring excavation. Work requires pinpointing paths of fiber, cables, pipes, and other conduits that carry utilities underground.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Reading utility maps, civil engineering drawings, GIS information.
• Using utility locate equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Locates water lines, sewer lines, electrical distribution system, primary and secondary, and fiber lines; updates SC 811 program-related records using their electronic process.
• Communication with City departments and personnel with up-to-date utilities in services and changes that need updated or corrected on maps/plats.
• Communicates with consumers/citizens in regard to utility locates needed from contractors or homeowners.

Minimum Education, Certifications, and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least one to two years of related utility locating experience.

SC driver’s license.

Work Schedule and Overtime

Monday – Thursday typical hours are 7 am – 5 pm.

Available to work as needed for response to emergencies or support utility staff, as needed.

Physical Demands/Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting and driving a vehicle.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and balance.
• Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
