R/S Electric Utility Services is seeking a skilled Mobile Utility Mechanic to support our utility construction operations. This position is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a fleet of utility trucks and heavy equipment used by our line crews. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, safety-focused, and enjoys traveling to jobsites to keep our equipment operating safely and efficiently.

Position Summary

The Mobile Utility Mechanic will travel throughout our service territory performing repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and diagnostics on utility fleet vehicles and equipment. This includes digger derricks, bucket trucks, service trucks, trailers, diesel-powered vehicles, and other equipment utilized by utility line crews.

This position operates a company-provided service truck and works closely with the Fleet Manager and field personnel to minimize equipment downtime and support project schedules.

  • Receive work assignments and scheduling directions from the fleet Manager.
  • Travel to jobsites, yards, and company facilities to perform maintenance and repairs.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, cooling systems, and driveline components.
  • Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and safety checks on utility vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair digger derricks, bucket trucks, service trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic and PTO systems commonly found on utility equipment.
  • Respond to field service calls and equipment breakdowns.
  • Communicate repair status, equipment concerns, and parts requirements to the Fleet Manager.
  • Complete service reports, inspection documentation, and maintenance records accurately.
  • Maintain service truck inventory, tools, equipment, and work area in a clean and professional manner.
  • Follow all company safety policies, DOT requirements, and traffic laws.
  • Support utility crews by ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational.
Required Qualifications
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a diesel, heavy equipment, or fleet mechanic.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, and diesel systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on utility fleet vehicles, bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes, or aerial equipment.
  • Familiarity with Altec, Terex, Versalift, Elliott, or similar utility equipment.
  • Experience with DOT inspections and compliance requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and climb on equipment throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout the region to support field operations.
  • Ability to respond to occasional emergency breakdowns outside normal working hours.
Travel Requirements
  • Frequent travel to jobsites throughout Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and surrounding service areas may be required.
  • Overnight travel may be required periodically based on project and utility support needs.
