Utility Engineer I (Commercial HVAC Tech)

In this full-time, first-shift role (Tuesday–Saturday, 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM), you’ll work hands-on with commercial boilers, chillers, HVAC units, and building automation systems to ensure a comfortable and efficient campus environment. Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent. Advanced degree and CFCCertification preferred.
- Formal specialized training in the operation and maintenance ofHVAC, mechanical and electrical systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible recentmaintenance experience in building mechanical systems, heating andcooling systems, pneumatic and digital controls, and energymanagement, including experience with commercial boilers (minimumof 250 H.P.) and large chillers (minimum of 250 tons).
- Journeyman HVAC License or Second Grade StationaryEngineer's License required. First Grade preferred.
- Flexibility and ability to change shifts when requested.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less thanfive (5) points on driving record.
- Ability to participate in bloodborne pathogens training withinsix (6) months of employment.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.

- Candidates may be required to successfully complete a pre-hire,post-offer physical examination, including drug screening.
This is an Essential Position and the employee must be availablefor building emergencies, and to perform regular duties or otherassigned duties at times when the campus is closed to students andnon-essential staff. This position may have an emphasis in one of primary areas withinthe Engineering functionality of Facilities Management depending onskills and licenses/certifications; though, is that the expectationthat position is interchangeable based upon need and direction ofsupervisor.
Plant Operations/HVAC
- Operates and maintains all mechanical and electrical equipmentof the college, including chillers and boilers.
- Maintains, repairs, and replaces hot water, condenser, andchilled water systems, including pumps, control valves, heatexchangers, cooling towers, and related controls.
- Maintains, repairs, and replaces air-moving, heating, cooling,humidification, and filtering equipment and systems such as, butnot limited to, fans, heat pumps, fan coil units, rooftop airconditioning systems, electronic and pneumatic modulatingthermostats, humidistats, duct stats and volume controls.
- Records equipment operating parameters; maintains all necessaryoperating logs and records; as well as, prepares reports, asrequired.
- Operates all equipment with college schedules through buildingautomation system.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates andrepairs electric, electronic, and pneumatic control systemcomponents associated with heating and cooling systems.
- Assigns analog and digital points, start/stop, status, and modecontrol through computer programming in building automation/energymanagement system.
Electrical/Mechanical/Plumbing
- Adjusts, maintains and makes repairs to refrigeration andcooling equipment and all other electrical or electro-mechanicalequipment.
- Responds to plumbing and heating/air conditioning issues; aswell as, repairs and replaces defective faucets and small pipes,clears clogged drains, and operate various sewer machines to clearsewer and water lines.
- Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces electricalequipment, including motors, emergency generators, uninterruptiblepower supply systems, relays, magnetic starters and variablefrequency drives.
- Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces wiringcircuits, cable, wire, conduit, circuit break panels, fuses, andswitches.
- Performs minor electrical repairs to wiring and lightingsystems in building interiors and exteriors, including connections,outlets, panels, fixtures, switches, etc., and maintains safeworking conditions of the same.
Functional Duties
- Performs preventative maintenance and document activity onbuilding equipment, as necessary and required.
- May lead and instruct lesser skilled workers, as required.
- Makes suggestions, when appropriate, for building and structuremodifications to improve operational efficiency and reducemaintenance costs.
- Assists supervisor in monitoring of supplies inventory,maintenance of shop equipment and general work areahousekeeping.
- Participates in snow removal or duties as assigned in responseto college emergencies, as necessary and/or directed.
- Effectively performs in a service environment and follows allcounty, state, college, and departmental policies andprocedures.
