Overview

The Crew Lead is responsible for leading assigned crews in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position is responsible for training assigned staff, promoting public and employee safety, ensuring compliance with established procedures, and coordinating daily workloads and assignments. The Crew Lead performs duties with little to no direct supervision, including after-hours and emergency response activities, and maintains significant interaction with contractors, residents, engineers, inspectors, and other stakeholders. The position reports to a Foreman or higher-level supervisor who provides work schedules, assignments, and performance expectations

Responsibilities
  • Ensure crews complete daily assignments; perform, lead, and train crews in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems
  • Operate backhoes and large excavation equipment to support water and wastewater system maintenance and construction activities
  • Train employees in CDL requirements, safe driving practices, and proper operation of vehicles and equipment
  • Ensure proper dosing and disinfection of water mains and repair materials; review, interpret, and train crew members on maps, plans, and drawings
  • Create permits for street cuts and confined space entry; ensure traffic control plans, trench safety requirements, and worksite safety practices are followed
  • Coordinate the installation and operation of well points and bypass pumps to support water and wastewater system maintenance activities
  • Use internal software to create work orders and document associated information; provide customer service to citizens; coordinate jobsite activities with engineers, construction inspectors, consultants, and customers
  • Ensure crews complete daily assignments; perform, lead, and train crews in wastewater system maintenance, cleaning, and CCTV inspection activities
  • Plan, lead, and perform the installation of large-volume commercial and residential water meters; train and schedule crews to install, program, and maintain AMR components and perform water service turn-offs and turn-ons for customers
  • Perform, lead, and train crew members to investigate, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues involving water distribution and wastewater collection systems
  • Review, interpret, and train crew members on maps, plans, drawings, and other technical documentation to ensure work is performed accurately and in accordance with specifications
  • Coordinate jobsite activities with engineers, construction inspectors, consultants, customers, and other stakeholders to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to established requirements
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
  • Non-Exempt – Full-Time – 40-hour work week
  • Must be available to work additional hours as needed
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

  • Any one of the following TCEQ licenses is required at time of hire for all divisions: Class I Collections, Class D Wastewater Operator, Class D Water Distribution, Class D Surface Water, or Class D Ground Water
