Job summary

The City of Fort Worth Water is hiring Water Field Operations Crew Leaders to oversee teams responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the city’s water distribution systems. This role combines leadership with hands-on work in the field.

You’ll supervise crews, manage complex repairs, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to high standards, including isolating leaks, coordinating emergency response, and keeping teams on task.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • TCEQ Water Distribution Class C license or higher required.
  • Texas Class A CDL with acceptable driving record required.
  • Minimum four years hands-on water/wastewater field ops experience.
  • Minimum one year supervisory/crew leadership experience.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather and lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotation may be required.
  • Pass physical, drug screen, and background checks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Crews: direction, oversight, and support for field crews on water distribution projects.
  • Ensure safe, efficient operation of essential water systems and compliance with standards.
  • Oversee installation, repair, and maintenance of mains, valves, hydrants, pumps, and taps.
  • Monitor work quality and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Perform complex hands-on tasks and provide technical guidance to the crew.
  • Promote safety and provide on-the-job training for team members.
  • Document operations and maintain detailed records and reports.
  • Respond to emergencies to minimize service disruption.

Education

High School Diploma or GED
TCEQ Water Distribution Class C license
Texas Class A CDL
Minimum four years experience in water/wastewater ops
Minimum one year supervisory experience
Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather
OT/nights/weekends/holiday availability

Pay Range: $26.57 – $33.21/hr.

Workdays & Hours: Field Operations is a 24/7 Operation - weekend work may be required. This position is a first responder in severe weather conditions/emergencies which will be subject to work after hours, emergency call back hours, nights, weekends, holidays and will participate in an on-call rotation schedule.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Possession of a TCEQ Water Distribution Class C license (or higher)
  • Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record
  • Minimum of four (4) years of hands‑on experience in water and/or wastewater field operations
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or crew leadership experience
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and lift up to 100 pounds
  • Flexibility to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed, including participating in an on‑call rotation schedule
  • Ability to pass a physical examination, drug screen, and education and background verification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with work order management software (e.g., GIS, Maximo, or similar)
  • Familiarity with large‑scale utility operations and infrastructure systems
Water Field Operations Crew Leader Job Responsibilities Include
  • Lead Crews: Provide direction, oversight, and support to field crews performing construction, maintenance, and repair activities related to water distribution systems
  • Ensure Safe and Efficient Operations: Maintain the safe, effective, and timely operation of essential water systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and City policies
  • Oversee Installation and Maintenance: Supervise the installation, repair, and maintenance of key water and wastewater infrastructure such as mains, valves, manholes, hydrants, pumps, and taps
  • Monitor Work Quality: Ensure that work is performed to high standards, adhering to established policies and procedures
  • Perform Technical Tasks: Take on complex, hands‑on tasks related to the technical aspects of water systems, offering expertise and guidance to the crew
  • Promote Safety and Training: Lead by example in ensuring a safe work environment and provide on‑the‑job training for team members to meet safety and operational standards
  • Report and Document Operations: Maintain detailed records, prepare operational reports, and ensure proper documentation for ongoing activities and project progress
  • Support Emergency Response: Be ready to respond to emergencies affecting water and wastewater systems, providing effective leadership during crises to minimize service disruption

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
