Job Description
POSITION GOALTo provide a high level of expertise in the maintenance and operations of Volusia County Schools to ensure the safety of all students, employees and facilities
Performance Responsibilities
- Work hours and locations will change as the need arises. Perform all duties according to scheduled hours and locations as assigned.
- Assure the safety of children comes first.
- Abide by all security procedures.
- Represent Volusia County School Board (VCSB) and the Department with a positive and professional service oriented demeanor.
- Work as part of a team by establishing and maintaining working relationships that foster efficiency and productivity and promote cooperation with administrators, fellow employees, faculty and the public.
- Patch driveways, parking lots and sidewalks.
- Assist in the relocation of portable classrooms and assist in the set-up and removal process.
- Conduct proper trimming and cutting of trees and when necessary, assist the Heavy Equipment Operator.
- Perform mowing operations as assigned.
- Repair and maintain chain link fencing.
- Maintain fence lines in accordance with VCS Maintenance and Operations Standards.
- Assist with assessment, planning and implementation of preventive maintenance procedures.
- Check and maintain assigned equipment on a daily basis.
- Report any equipment misuse and/ or damage, dangerous or hazardous situations related to work orders, equipment or vehicles to supervisor.
- Responsible for Departmental equipment, tools, and repair parts.
- Abide by safety rules/ standards when using tools and equipment, which includes wearing required safety equipment and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing as assigned.
- Maintain a clean orderly work environment, which includes the service truck and all equipment.
- Wear provided designated departmental uniform.
- Attend and/ or conduct cross-training sessions with others in the Division and apply skills/ knowledge obtained.
- Respond during times of disaster/ emergency, as the need arises, including evenings and weekends.
- Perform effectively in emergency situations.
- Operate school board vehicles, when assigned, in accordance with operational procedures and School Board Policy 505.
- Provide personal tools as required, to perform assigned work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations.

Required Qualifications/Certifications
- High School diploma, or G.E.D. equivalent preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years experience in building related trades, preferred
- Experience in heavy equipment and chain saw operation preferred
- Experience in asphalt and concrete patching preferred
- Experience in chain link fence repair preferred
- Knowledge of catch basins and storm water run-off preferred
- Must be able to pass written and demonstration tests, upon request
- Must be available after working hours (on-call) as a part of the emergency and disaster team
- Must be available for scheduled shift work
- Must be able to attend and complete various on-the-job training sessions
- Provide personal hand tools in accordance with established department list
- Currently hold or obtain a Temporary Commercial Driver License Class "B" (with Air Brakes), preferred
- Possess a valid Florida Driver's License; if a holder of any other valid US state-issued Driver's License, agree to acquire a Florida Driver's License within thirty (30) days of employment
- Must be able to operate school board vehicles, when assigned, in accordance with operational procedures and School Board Policy 505

- Familiar with Volusia County area or ability to read road maps
