Job summary

The City of Pleasanton, CA is seeking a Utilities System Operator II to support water distribution and sewer collection systems. You’ll perform maintenance, inspections, and responsive work across pumps, meters, and telemetry systems while ensuring safety and reliability for the community.

Ideal candidates will have hands-on field experience, strong teamwork and customer service skills, and licenses in water distribution/treatment as required by California regulations.

Qualifications

• Must be experienced in operation and maintenance of water/wastewater systems.

Job description

The City of Pleasanton is excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Utilities System Operator II in the Public Works Department. In this role, you will help support the day-to-day operations of the City’s water distribution and sewer collection systems, performing a wide range of maintenance, operational, inspection, and response work that helps keep these critical public utilities safe, reliable, and functioning efficiently. You’ll work on essential infrastructure including water and sewer mains, services, pump stations, wells, meters, valves, and related equipment, while also using telemetry and computerized control systems to monitor and maintain operations. This position offers a dynamic, field-based environment where your work has a direct impact on essential services the community relies on every day.

In This Role, You Will

• Oversee and assist in the repair of water and sewer mains and water services, tap mains, and install pipe as needed.
• Check and maintain the daily operation of water or sewer pump stations and wells.
• Perform maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, meters, and related equipment, including installing, lubricating, packing, replacing, and repairing components.
• Work with telemetry equipment and computerized control systems used for monitoring water and sewer systems.
• Operate and maintain trucks, backhoes, compressors, hydroflushers, vactor trucks, and other power equipment.
• Perform laboratory analysis on water and sewer samples.
• Respond to customer inquiries and complaints related to water quality, water pressure, sewer backups, and leaks.
• Mark streets or ground locations to identify underground water and sewer pipes using maps and blueprints.
• Perform water system flushing duties and work with chemicals such as chlorine.
• Assist with sewer inspection work, including use of television pipeline inspection equipment.
• Clean and remove stoppages in sewer lines using specialized sewer equipment.
• Record readings on flow meters, PSI gauges, and other equipment, maintain system records, and produce reports.
• Set up and operate traffic control devices around work areas.
• Make operational adjustments to computerized controlled equipment as necessary.

The Ideal Candidate Will Be

• Experienced in the operation and maintenance of water and/or wastewater systems.
• Knowledgeable in pump and motor parts, valving, flow mechanics, plumbing materials, and safe work practices for hazardous or confined environments.
• Familiar with state regulations governing public water distribution systems and sewer and storm drain collection systems.
• Skilled at reading and understanding safety manuals, operating manuals, equipment manuals, work orders, maps, blueprints, and schematic diagrams.
• Able to evaluate and troubleshoot pumping and control systems and valves.
• Effective working independently or as part of a crew, with strong judgment, attention to safety, and a positive attitude.
• Professional and courteous when interacting with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
• Comfortable using basic computer systems and two-way radio communications.

Education and Experience

• Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential duties of the job.

License

• Possession of a valid class C California driver's license.
• State of California Grade II water distribution license is required.
• State of California Grade I water treatment license is required.
• Grade I CWEA sewer collection certificate is required.
• Obtain a Class A California Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement within one year from date of hire.
