Job summary

System One/Joule Staffing in Quincy, MA is seeking a Utilities 3rd Engineer to operate high-pressure boilers, generators, and related systems on an onsite basis. You will monitor equipment, maintain logs, and ensure regulatory compliance across air, water, and safety standards.

The role requires a MA Third Class Engineer License, 3+ years of boiler experience, and the ability to obtain a 3M wastewater license within 12 months.

Qualifications

• Must hold Commonwealth of Massachusetts Third Class Engineers License.
• 3+ years of experience with high-pressure boilers and related equipment.
• Must be able to obtain Grade 3M or higher Municipal Wastewater License within 12 months of start date.
• Physically capable of lifting up to 65 lbs and working in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and inspect boilers, generators, and associated equipment to ensure safe operation.
• Maintain logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities for regulatory compliance.
• Ensure continuous compliance with local, state, and federal air, water, and safety regulations.
• Maintain water levels, adjust combustion air, and control fuel flow.
• Test water quality and take corrective actions for steam generation and processes.
• Interpret readings from gauges and meters to monitor boiler operation.
• Analyze problems and take corrective actions to ensure continuous operation.
• Isolate equipment for safe inspection and repair (Lock Out Tag Out).
• Keep the Utilities Chief Engineer informed of operating conditions.
• Support safety, appearance, compliance, quality, and cost standards.
• Complete safety and equipment audits as assigned.

Job Title: Utilities 3rd Engineer

Location: Quincy MA

Type: Direct Hire

Compensation: $28.00 To $42.00 Hourly

Work Model: Onsite – onsite

Hours: 12-hour shifts either 6 am - 6 pm or 6 pm - 6 am. Candidates need to be able to workday or night shift. Two-week rotation. Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday (48 hours) Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday (36 hours)

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and inspect high-pressure steam boilers, electric generators, air compressors, process cooling water, water treatment systems, and associated auxiliary equipment including pumps, valves, transmitters, gauges, alarms, and safety devices to detect malfunctions and ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation.
• Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and equipment malfunctions for regulatory compliance.
• Ensure continuous compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to air quality, water quality, and safety.
• Maintain proper water levels in boilers, adjust combustion air supplies, and control fuel flow into burners.
• Test water quality and take corrective actions to maintain chemical conditions for steam generation, processing cooling, and wastewater systems.
• Interpret readings from gauges, meters, and charts to monitor boiler operation within normal parameters.
• Analyze problems and take appropriate corrective actions to ensure continuous operation.
• Adjust controls and valves to regulate system operations.
• Isolate equipment mechanically and electrically for safe inspection and repair (Lock Out Tag Out).
• Keep the Utilities Chief Engineer informed of operating conditions.
• Support company safety, appearance, compliance, quality, and cost standards.
• Complete safety and equipment audits as assigned.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Extensive field work walking throughout the facility.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and climb heights including boilers, cooling towers, and storage tanks.
• Dexterity working with tools and machinery.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects up to 65 lbs.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions and use PPE.
• Must have a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Third Class Engineers License (REQUIRED).
• 3+ years of experience working with high-pressure boilers and related equipment.
• Ability to obtain Grade 3M or higher Municipal Wastewater License within 12 months of start date.
• Physical requirements include frequent walking, standing, lifting, and climbing.
