Job summary

Northside Hospital is seeking an Ultrasound Technologist to perform diagnostic ultrasound exams, including vascular and breast imaging, in a fast-paced radiology department.

You will explain procedures, position patients, and operate ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality images while maintaining safety and accurate documentation.

Qualifications

  • Certification in ultrasound applicable to the role and ongoing CE compliance.
  • CPR certification or obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Graduate of accredited program and ARDMS/ARRT/CCI certified.

Responsibilities

  • Operates ultrasound equipment and adjusts factors for optimal image.
  • Performs arterial and venous Doppler studies and prints/archives images.
  • Maintains safety, assists in training staff, and documents charges.

Responsibilities
  • Collects pertinent medical information and reviews physician’s order to identify the reason for examination and potential contraindications.
  • Explains the procedure and positions the patient.
  • Selects proper technical factors and runs the transducer over the designated area of the body.
  • Observes the image and modifies equipment parameters as necessary to obtain an optimal image.
  • May freeze and print a frame. Reviews the record to ensure that the correct anatomy is visualized.
  • Performs limited vascular studies (venous, arterial Doppler, carotid Doppler).
  • Assembles records for interpretation by the physician.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on ultrasound equipment. Refers major problems to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assists in orienting and training personnel.
  • Enters patient charges into the computer system.
  • Pracices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to the manager.
  • Utilizes skilled judgment and diagnostic criteria to accurately identify and differentiate normal versus abnormal findings.
  • Performs arterial evaluations to determine the presence, localization and extent of arterial sclerosis/stenosis with regard to circulation utilizing Doppler ultrasound, and/or color duplex ultrasound imaging.
  • Performs venous evaluations to determine the presence of deep venous obstruction (thrombus) and venous valvular incompetence utilizing Doppler ultrasound and color duplex ultrasound imaging.
Qualifications
  • Initial Qualifications for Ultrasound Technologists
    • Certified or eligible for certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Sonography (ARRT) (S) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
    • All sonographers must obtain certification within one year of hire date or cross‑train.
    • Certified in Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or obtain within 90 days of employment.
    • Continuing Education: Sonographers must be in compliance with the ARDMS, ARRT or CCI requirements for continuing education appropriate to their practices.
  • Initial Qualifications for Vascular Technologists
    • ARDMS certification in vascular technology RVT.
    • ARRT certification in vascular technology RT (VS).
    • CCI certification in vascular technology RVS.
    • Continuing Education: Sonographers must be in compliance with the ARDMS, ARRT or CCI requirements for continuing education appropriate to their practices.
  • Initial Qualifications for Sonographer or Mammography Technologist – Breast Ultrasound
    • ARDMS certification and current registration, or
    • ARRT post‑primary certification and current registration in breast sonography, or
    • ARRT certification and current registration and MQSA qualified.
    • 5 CEUs specific to breast ultrasound.
    • Certified in Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or obtain within 90 days of employment.
    • Continuing Experience: Regular performance of breast ultrasound exams.
    • Continuing Education: Registered technologists are in compliance with the CE requirements of their certifying organization for the imaging modality in which they perform services; CE includes credits pertinent to the technologist’s ACR accredited clinical practice.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Graduate from an accredited school of Ultrasound Technology.
    • Prior experience in ultrasound.
