Weekly schedule will be set by the Upper School Director).Job Shift: DayEducation Level: NATravel Percentage: NoneCategory: EducationRole Description:The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, coeducational day school in Manhattan, seeks a Upper School Science Lab Tech to begin in August 2026.Our science program is grounded in a progressive, inquiry-based approach to learning, where students actively engage in hands-on investigation, experimentation, and scientific problem-solving. Labs are a central component of instruction and are typically conducted in 90-minute class blocks. These experiences range from open-ended experimental design projects, in which students develop and test their own hypotheses, to teacher-led demonstrations and structured investigations that require students to follow established protocols and procedures.The science department supports a diverse range of Chemistry and Biology courses, including 10th Grade Chemistry, 11th Grade Biology, Chemistry II, Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Biology, Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy, and Oyster Ecology. Together, these courses require substantial preparation, organization, and maintenance of laboratory materials, equipment, and protocols to ensure safe, effective, and engaging learning experiences for students.Key Responsibilities:Laboratory PreparationSet up laboratory equipment and materials before classes.Prepare chemicals, specimens, and experiment kits according to the teacher's instructions.Label and organize supplies for student activities.Ensure all equipment is functioning properly before use.Inventory and Supply ManagementMaintain inventory of chemicals, equipment, and consumable supplies.Monitor stock levels and notify when items need replenishment.Receive, unpack, and store deliveries.Keep inventory records up to date.Safety and ComplianceFollow laboratory safety procedures and school policies.Ensure proper storage and labeling of chemicals.Assist with chemical disposal and sterilization according to regulations.Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safety documentation.Equipment MaintenanceClean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment.Perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs.Arrange servicing for specialized equipment when necessary.Report damaged or unsafe equipment.Laboratory OrganizationKeep laboratories, prep rooms, and storage areas clean and organized.Wash and store glassware and equipment after use.Organize chemicals according to compatibility and safety requirements.Dispose of waste appropriately.Administrative TasksMaintain laboratory records and logs.Update equipment maintenance schedules.Track budgets and purchasing requests.Prepare reports on inventory, safety inspections, or equipment needs.Collaborate with teachers to revise and optimize laboratory protocols, ensuring experiments are safe, effective, and aligned with course objectivesTechnology SupportSet up microscopes, probes, sensors, and data-collection devices.Support laboratory softwareThis job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, or qualifications associated with the position.
