Job summary

Central Park Conservancy in New York City is seeking a Gardener in the Landscape Management Department to maintain plant beds and landscape areas within an assigned section. You will work under managers and forepersons to support routine and seasonal care of landscapes across Central Park.

The role requires urban gardening knowledge, ability to lift 50 lbs, and availability for overtime, weekends, and holidays. You will interact with park patrons and contribute to special events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Certificate from horticulture or botanical program.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Two years of full-time gardening experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
  • Fundamental understanding of urban gardening in a park setting.
  • Knowledge of environmentally responsible horticultural practices.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to identify ornamental and native plant material of the northeast US.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor daily.

Responsibilities

  • Care for and maintain plant beds and landscapes in an assigned Section.
  • Prune, weed, plant, mulch, irrigate, rake and perform related tasks.
  • Prepare beds for planting and work with annuals, perennials, bulbs and trees.
  • Install/repair fences as needed.
  • Support waste management and trash disposal in landscapes and paths.
  • Perform snow removal and ice mitigation as required.
  • Maintain drainage by keeping catch basins clear.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and seasonal interns.
  • Keep records and write simple reports.
  • Use Microsoft Office and other software in daily tasks.
  • Interact with park patrons and colleagues professionally.
  • Assist in general landscape maintenance and special events.
