Job summary

Uncommon Schools seeks an ESL Teacher to support K‑12 ESL students across Newark campuses, requiring travel between sites. You will report to the Associate Director of Special Education and collaborate with school‑based coordinators, teachers, and leaders.

The role focuses on implementing WIDA-aligned curricula, conducting sheltered instruction, and attending IEP meetings. A Bachelor’s degree is required; NJ ESL certification is preferred; two years of urban teaching experience is desirable.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
• Two years urban teaching experience preferred.
• NJ English as a Second Language State Certification preferred.
• GPA requirements for NJ licensure: 2.75 (pre‑Sept 1, 2016) or 3.0 (on/after Sept 1, 2016).
• Belief in Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is essential.

Responsibilities

• Provide in-class support in the general education setting and small group instruction to ESL students.
• Attend and participate in IEP meetings as directed by the Associate Director of Special Education.
• Follow ESSA guidelines for ESL identification, instruction, assessment and exiting ESL status.
• Create a positive, structured learning environment aligned to WIDA standards.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues; engage families in education.
