Upper School U.S. History Teacher — Long-Term Substitute (Grade 10)

The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to serve as a long-term substitute teaching U.S. History in the Upper School during the spring semester of the 2026-27 school year. The position will begin as early as January 4 and continue through March 8.

Position Overview

The Upper School U.S. History Teacher guides 10th-grade students in the study of American history from the age of exploration through the early twenty-first century. The long-term substitute will teach both college-preparatory and Honors-level courses, helping students develop historical knowledge while learning to read sources carefully, evaluate competing interpretations, construct historical arguments, and write clearly about the past.

We are seeking an educator with a strong background in history who can provide clear and engaging instruction while maintaining continuity in established courses during an extended faculty leave. The U.S. History Teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into classroom life and collaborates with other members of the Upper School faculty in the shared work of forming students within a Christian liberal arts education.

This is a long-term substitute position beginning as early as January 4, 2027, and continuing through March 8, 2027.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in History, Education, or a related field preferred
• Experience teaching high school history or social studies preferred
• Strong background in U.S. History
• Ability to engage students with primary and secondary sources and foster thoughtful discussion, historical analysis, and writing
• Ability to integrate Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
