Summary: The school counselor serves as the center of the guidance effort of the school and is the person through which all pertinent information regarding the student is channeled. Helps students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
- Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
- Evaluate students’ attributes and assist them in realizing their objectives.
- Develop and implement counseling strategies with contemporary methods of mentoring.
- Identify behavioral problems or at risk students and act appropriately to remedy the situation.
- Pay attention to societal and cultural differences in all student matters.
- Assess the development of students and highlight the sense of accomplishment.
- Complete evaluations, analyze results and provide purposeful feedback.
- Cooperate with parents, academic staff and external partners.
- Arrange and schedule orientation programs and internships.
- Advertise facilities and study programs to potential students.
- Implement and facilitate educational and training workshops for academic staff.
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career, and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
- Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
- Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
- Study and update student records
- Assist with testing, 504s, IEPs, and data collection as necessary.
- Attend professional development opportunities to maintain a high level of skill and knowledge of current research and practices.
- Serve as a consultant to administrators, teachers, and parents.
- Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
- Respect the confidentiality of information regarding students and be discreet in dealing with parents and educational personnel.
- Assists the Uppler School Director with developing high school schedules and assigning classes to students.
- Ensure this job description accurately and correctly reflects the duties actually performed.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Lower School Director, Upper School Director, CEO, CAO, or the Board.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Reports To:
- The School Counselor will report to the Upper School Director
Education, Experience, and Specific Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Counseling
- Certification as a School Counselor
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
