Reports to: Academic Director and Dean of the Academy

Employment Status: Full Time, 10 months

Position Overview: Teacher will provide instruction for students that enables them to learn and demonstrate mastery of the curriculum of Atlanta Youth Academy in a Christian, college-preparatory environment. Teacher will teach the following classes: * English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Bible, and Reading.

  • Instruct students to read and discuss a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts to include dramatic literature, poetry, and biography. Discuss characters; their thoughts or actions which helps reveal their motives and desires.
  • Strengthen students’ skillset with writing reports that contain titles, tables of content and simple bibliographies, as well as fictional narratives, biographies, and autobiographies. Teach students to craft simple and complex sentences in their writing assignments.
  • Provide instruction to develop the students’ mastery in the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with positive and negative numbers, decimals and fractions. By the end of the year, students should be comfortable completing multiple-digit multiplication and division problems.
  • Collaborate with our Science teacher to instruct study topics within earth science (aspects of the earth’s processes), life science (i.e., digestive functions of a mammal) and physical science (composition of atoms and their formation relative to molecules).
  • Explain the cultural and historical aspects of the North American region. Mediate the students’ discussions on the formation of the United States, immigration to the colonies and the Declaration of Independence. Prepare and assist as they create oral presentations and write informative reports on related topics of interest.

Education and Experience Requirements: A successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Early Childhood Education or related field. A master’s degree is ideal, however, not required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan and conduct lessons with a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate, and to make broader connections toward the development of effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

• Administer Balanced Assessments to assist in the implementation of teaching that effectively and reasonably meets the needs of each student.

• Demonstrate ability to foster cooperation from students, co-workers, parents, and guardians

• Effectively maintain a safe, well-organized learning environment that promotes active learning

• Integrate appropriate technology into classroom instruction

• Enforce all administrative policies and rules governing students

• Confer with parents and/or guardians, other teachers, Learning Specialist, and administration to resolve behavioral and academic challenges

• Work with Learning Specialist to identify remediation needs and to complete the referral process for remedial services

• Demonstrate proper and effective written and verbal communication skills

• Facilitate home-school communication by such means as parent-teacher conferences, telephone, email, and other forms of appropriate written communication

• Provide tutorial for students before or after school

• Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests

• Prepare adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent

• Account for student attendance, punctuality, and general well-being

• Follow professional ethics in all work-related activities

• Avoid behaviors which may perceptually position AYA as other than Christ-centered or distracts from colleague morale.

• Participate in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other professional development or training seminars.

Additional Responsibilities: Other duties which may be assigned by the Administration.

Physical Demands:

When performing activities throughout the day related to the educating of students, the teacher spends most of the day standing in the classroom. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver between desks, etc. Dealing with the students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis. After receiving bus and safety training by AYA Operations, the teacher must be able to transport their class to and from field trips on our small passenger buses.

Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects (textbooks, materials, desks, chairs, etc.). The teacher must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Positions may vary from standing, sitting, or walking. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. over smooth to uneven surfaces such as on asphalt, on the playground, or on the grass.
