Position Description

Amentum provides contract support for the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center and implements the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program at the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center. This involves geospatial data collection, mapping, GIS database development and management, GPS, and environmental/GIS database services in support of the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center and national programs located in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The UAS Pilot – Visual Observer works within a team environment performing UAS operations to collect and process mapping data within the GIS Program at the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center. This role involves using various aerial platforms, image gathering hardware, and software to produce high-resolution maps and data sets. The GIS Technician will work closely with the Lead UAS pilot and may serve as Remote Pilot in Command and/or Visual Observer during data acquisition flights and UAS-GIS Program operations as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operate as the Visual Observer and/or Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC), responsible for flight planning, execution, and risk management.
  • Conduct pre-flight planning, including operational briefings, weather analysis, NOTAMs, and airspace requirements.
  • Implement operational risk management review for each mission.
  • Validate UAS/sensor capabilities, functions, and integration for each mission.
  • Perform pre-flight inspections, evaluate environment and obstacles, and coordinate with FAA airspace and airport tower.
  • Complete pre/post UAS mission reports and document inventory and maintenance actions.
  • Perform equipment testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with internal and external entities for safe operations.
  • Collect, handle, and process UAS data, photogrammetry, and ground surveys.
  • Conduct ground control surveys using RTK/PPK GPS equipment.
  • Evaluate data accuracy and ensure deliverables meet standards.
  • Prepare reports on field data, post-flight missions, and logs.

Position Requirements:

  • Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.
  • At least 1 year of UAS experience in photogrammetry, mapping, or related imagery or laser data.
  • Experience with UAS missions in the NAS.
  • Knowledge of planning, coordinating, and executing UAS operations.
  • Minimum of 50 flight hours on various UAS platforms (100 hours preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Strong technical skills and ability to learn multiple software and hardware.
