Position Description:

Amentum provides contract support for the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center and nationally implements the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program. This involves geospatial data collection, mapping, GIS database development and management, Global Positioning System (GPS), and environmental/GIS database management services in support of the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center and national programs located in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) Pilot – Visual Observer works within a team environment, performing UAS operations to collect and process UAS-collected mapping data within the GIS Program. This position will use a variety of aerial platforms, image-gathering hardware, and related software to produce high-resolution maps and data sets. The GIS Technician will work closely with the Chief UAS pilot and be capable of serving as Remote Pilot in Command and/or Visual Observer during data acquisition flights and UAS - GIS Program operations as needed.

Location: Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City, NJ

Tasks:

  1. Operate as the Visual Observer and/or Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC), responsible for flight planning, execution, and risk management.
  2. Conduct pre-flight planning, including operational briefings, analyzing weather forecasts, Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs), and airspace requirements.
  3. Plan and implement operational risk management reviews for each mission.
  4. Validate mission-specific UAS/sensor capabilities, functions, and sensor integration.
  5. Conduct pre-flight safety briefings and ensure overall mission readiness.
  6. Perform drone pre-flight inspections and evaluate the mission environment for obstructions.
  7. Document and complete pre/post UAS mission reports.
  8. Perform equipment testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  9. Communicate and coordinate with internal and external entities for safe flight operations.
  10. Collect, handle, and process UAS and related data, photogrammetry, ground surveys, and design documents.
  11. Process and evaluate data accuracy and sufficiency, ensuring deliverables meet expectations and professional standards.
  12. Prepare and complete reports related to collected field data and pilot logbooks.

Position Requirements:

Possess a current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Minimum of 1 year of UAS experience, preferably in collecting photogrammetry, mapping, or related imagery or laser data. UAS mission experience in the National Airspace System (NAS). Must have knowledge and experience with planning, coordinating, and executing UAS operations. Must have a minimum of 50 total flight hours operating various UAS platforms, including fixed wing and rotorcraft (100 hours desired). Valid driver's license required. This position requires travel as needed to transport drone equipment and conduct UAS missions. Very strong technical capacity; ability to learn and master multiple software packages, hardware, and workflows.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. A current FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.
  2. Experience using GPS and GPS RTK field collection equipment and processing software products.
  3. Applied knowledge of surveying references such as coordinate systems, projections, datums, geoids, and state plane zones.
  4. Knowledge and experience with geospatial mapping software and technologies such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Pix4D, Drone2Map, etc.
  5. GIS - Survey Experience (GPS, Total Station, Topographic Mapping).
