Job summary

Seattle University is seeking a Communications Writer to identify and pitch compelling university stories. You will conduct interviews with faculty, students, alumni, and partners, and craft features for digital and print platforms including The Newsroom and Seattle University Magazine.

The role requires strong writing, journalistic ethics and ability to work independently or in teams, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and CMS tools. The position is onsite on the Seattle campus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, English or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in journalism, writing, content creation or higher education communications.
  • Exceptional writing, interviewing and storytelling skills.
  • Strong understanding of journalistic ethics, fact-checking and AP style.
  • Ability to translate complex topics into clear, engaging narratives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a team or collaborative environment, and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic content management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and pitch story ideas that highlight the people, programs, partnerships, events and research of the university.
  • Conduct interviews with faculty, students, alumni and industry partners.
  • Write feature stories, profiles and other content for use across digital and print platforms including the university website, newsletters, our news site The Newsroom, Seattle University Magazine, email campaigns and social media.
  • Collaborate with photographers, designers and videographers to supplement stories with images.
  • Ensure content is consistent with the university's editorial voice and aligned with the university's strategic messaging.
  • Develop sources within the university as well as alumni, donors and the community to inform relevant, timely storytelling.
  • Coordinate storytelling ideas with the Assistant Director of Communications and Publishing, the Director of Strategic Communications.
  • Drive organic visibility by creating search-optimized copy that reinforces SU's brand Write content that satisfies search intent and supports SU's subject-matter authority.
  • Assist in editing or proofreading content as needed (in adherence to Seattle University's Editorial Style Guide).
