Job summary

California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is seeking a University Controller to lead core financial functions, modernize operations, and drive data-enabled improvements. The role oversees general accounting, accounts payable, and financial reporting, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Finance.

The position is hybrid (1 day remote) in Monterey, CA, with relocation assistance and on-campus housing options. Competitive CSUMB benefits are included.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or closely related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible accounting management experience.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid California CPA license preferred.
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Tax, Business Administration, or related field is highly desirable.
  • Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent information systems, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google applications.

About this role:

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Finance, the University Controller provides leadership for the university's core financial, transactional, and compliance functions, with a strong mandate to modernize operations, lead enterprise change, and leverage technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and service delivery. The role oversees general accounting, accounts payable, and financial reporting.

The University Controller serves as the university's chief steward of financial integrity while acting as a change leader responsible for transforming financial operations into a streamlined, data-enabled, customer-centric organization. The Controller is primarily responsible for ensuring accurate financial records and timely reporting to the Chancellor's Office, leadership, and the Associate Vice President for Finance while providing stewardship of university assets and collaborating across campus in support of the University's mission and goals.

Scope & Impact
  • Responsible for meeting CSU accounting requirements to record and report the University's financial transactions.
  • Oversee preparation of campus financial statements and reports.
  • Ensure fiscal operations meet CSU and campus policy requirements.
  • Manage the general ledger, operating ledger operations, and chart of accounts.
  • Supervise management and accounting staff while developing talent, mentoring employees, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Plan, direct, oversee, and certify year-end financial reporting activities including GAAP financial statements, audits, and year-end close.
  • Work cooperatively with internal and external auditors.
  • Oversee maintenance of the University's finance systems and internal controls.
  • Interpret and implement applicable CSU, GASB, FASB, federal, and state regulations and accounting pronouncements.
  • Oversee preparation and distribution of campus financial reports for all funding sources.
  • Safeguard University resources and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Develop and administer policies and procedures for all University funds.
  • Analyze financial activity and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Oversee implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Develop and present financial services training programs.
  • Participate on University committees, teams, and work groups.
  • Provide recommendations regarding short- and long-term financial objectives, policies, and actions.
  • Champion best practices and continuous improvement across Finance.
  • Prepare reports, documentation, correspondence, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business administration, or closely related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible accounting management experience, preferably in higher education or a non-profit setting.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid California CPA license preferred.
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Tax, Business Administration, or related field is highly desirable.
  • Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent information systems, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google applications.

  • Ability to supervise, train, evaluate, analyze situations, solve problems, and build effective working relationships.
