Duties & Responsibilities

The University Based Teacher Educator (UBTE) plays a pivotal role in the field experience for the teacher candidate. They serve as an ambassador for VCU School of Education and support the success of the school based teacher educator (SBTE) in their role with the intern. As such, they are expected to do the following:

  1. Read and understand the School of Education’s Intern/Extern and Student Teaching Handbook.
  2. Complete the Clinical Faculty (CF) training, the level of which will be determined by your hire date and most recent training. This will focus on ‘coaching’ instead of ‘telling’ (guide vs sage).
  3. Attend all UBTE meetings: This includes the orientation at the start of each semester AND the monthly UBTE meetings (via Zoom) as well as individual check‑ins, as needed.
  4. Facilitate initial meeting with SBTE and teacher candidate to collaboratively establish shared norms, expectations, and responsibilities for the internship/student teaching experience during the first week of the placement.
  5. Participate in required training on the Clinical Evaluation Continuum (CEC) and its scoring criteria (Key Elements) to formatively and summatively assess Teacher Candidates. CEC training will take place in two parts: one general asynchronous training session, and one synchronous program‑specific training session.
  6. Complete between 6–10 observations (minimum 8–10 observations in elementary; 6 observations in secondary) and submit coaching cycle documentation to the department.
  7. Incorporate technological tools into the coaching process, as appropriate (e.g. conducting zoom conferences, reviewing digital lesson plans or journals, providing digital feedback).
  8. Communicate regularly with SBTE regarding teacher candidate progress and facilitate meetings to review collaborative reflection logs and CEC scores.
  9. After meeting with the SBTE and teacher candidate, submit the CEC at midterm and final to our online system; for students with two placements, submissions will occur at the end of each placement.
  10. Submit midterm and final grades for students to the department.
  11. Supervise the completion of the clinical experience log that students must submit for licensure.
  12. Communicate with the appropriate program coordinator as needed for student support. Supervisors are expected to use their VCU email address for all email communications.

Successful completion of all duties outlined above will factor into rehiring decisions.
