Job summary

The VCU School of Education invites qualified candidates for the University Based Teacher Educator (UBTE) position in the greater Richmond area. The UBTE will instruct, coach and supervise student teachers during their practical clinical work.

You will join the School Of Education MBU and work with the SBTE to establish shared norms, participate in CEC training, and observe candidates while integrating technology into coaching.

Qualifications

  • Must hold Virginia Collegiate Professional Certificate and Virginia Teaching Endorsement in one of the listed areas.
  • At least 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work well with students and faculty.
  • Computer literacy including ability to use spreadsheets and online forms.
  • Experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with Zoom or other virtual platforms.
  • Self starter with the ability to work with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility for all backgrounds and experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Read and understand the Intern/Extern and Student Teaching Handbook.
  • Complete the Clinical Faculty training.
  • Attend all UBTE meetings (orientation, monthly Zoom meetings, and check-ins).
  • Facilitate initial meetings with SBTE and teacher candidates to establish shared norms and responsibilities.
  • Participate in required CEC training to assess Teacher Candidates.
  • Complete 6–10 observations (8–10 elementary; 6 secondary) and submit coaching documentation.
  • Incorporate technological tools into the coaching process (Zoom, digital feedback).
  • Communicate regularly with SBTE regarding candidate progress and schedule reviews.
  • Submit CEC midterm and final scores for students with two placements.
  • Submit midterm and final grades for licensure logs.
  • Coordinate with program staff for student support using VCUs email system.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The University Based Teacher Educator (UBTE) plays a pivotal rolein the field experience for the teacher candidate. They serve as anambassador for VCU School of Education and support the success ofthe school based teacher educator (SBTE) in their role with theintern. As such, they are expected to do the following:

  1. Read and understand the School of Education’s Intern/Externand Student Teaching Handbook.
  2. Complete the Clinical Faculty (CF) training, the level of whichwill be determined by your hire date and most recent training. Thiswill focus on ‘coaching’ instead of ‘telling’ (guide vs sage).
  3. Attend all UBTE meetings: This includes theorientation at the start of each semester AND the monthlyUBTE meetings (via Zoom) as well as individual check-ins, asneeded.
  4. Facilitate initial meeting with SBTE and teacher candidate tocollaboratively establish shared norms, expectations, andresponsibilities for the internship/student teaching experienceduring the first week of the placement.
  5. Participate in required training on the Clinical EvaluationContinuum (CEC) and its scoring criteria (Key Elements) toformatively and summatively assess Teacher Candidates. CEC trainingwill take place in two parts: one general asynchronous trainingsession, and one synchronous program-specific trainingsession.
  6. Complete between 6-10 observations (minimum 8-10 observationsin elementary; 6 observations in secondary) and submit coachingcycle documentation to the department.
  7. Incorporate technological tools into the coaching process, asappropriate (e.g. conducting zoom conferences, reviewing digitallesson plans or journals, providing digital feedback).
  8. Communicate regularly with SBTE regarding teacher candidateprogress and facilitate meetings to review collaborative reflectionlogs and CEC scores.
  9. After meeting with the SBTE and teacher candidate, submit theCEC at midterm and final to our online system; for students withtwo placements, submissions will occur at the end of eachplacement.
  10. Submit midterm and final grades for students to thedepartment.
  11. Supervise the completion of the clinical experience log thatstudents must submit for licensure.
  12. Communicate with the appropriate program coordinator as neededfor student support. Supervisors are expected to use their VCUemail address for all email communications.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including ability to use spreadsheets andonline preforms.

  • Proficiency with Zoom or other virtual platforms.
  • Self starter with the ability to work with littlesupervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students for all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in content area and previous higher educationteaching experience.
  • Experience mentoring in an education setting.
