Job description

Position Summary

The Universal Technician I is the first step in a progression to a Universal Technician III. The Universal Technician I is required to transition to a Universal Technician II within 6 months and to a Universal Technician III within 12 months.

Description

The Universal Technician I is responsible for all aspects of the installation of the CATV drop system from the tap to the TV in the customer’s home. This includes the outside drop, activation of the drop, proper NEC grounding, proper signal termination, placement of all electronics in the home (splitters, set‑top converters and modems, phones), customer education on specified home premise equipment, and wreck‑out and removal of abandoned cable.

Essential Functions
  • Timely and accurate completion of all installation work orders assigned daily.
  • Perform basic installation related to business as usual (new connect, reconnect, disconnect, converter installation, wall fish, additional outlets, rewires, customer education).
  • Maintain a working relationship with managers and maintenance personnel in assigned areas.
  • Perform basic installation related to business expansion (HSD and wireless).
  • Perform installation related to Buckeye Phone (alarm configurations, entry doors), Arris Whole Home (BMG) product, and TiVo.
  • Report any system problems or damages to the Customer Facing Supervisor or Operations Support in a timely manner.
  • Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics of service problems.
  • Drive a company vehicle to and from various job sites.
  • Operate all equipment essential to complete work safely (extension ladders, bucket trucks, etc.).
  • Complete work orders clearly, completely, and accurately, and turn them over to the Customer Facing Supervisor on a timely basis.
  • Maintain inventory of all cable equipment in possession.
  • Collect money in the field from subscribers and turn it over to management at the end of the shift.
  • Read cable blue prints.
  • Use proper phone etiquette.
  • Follow and enforce the company’s policies and procedures, including EEO guidelines and safety, at all times.
  • Perform any miscellaneous department duties as needed.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent – required.
  • 1 year of previous experience in the telecommunications industry – preferred.
  • Math ability to the 12th grade level – preferred.
  • Ability to read and spell English properly – required.
  • Physical ability to climb poles and ladders – required.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 60 pounds – required.
  • Attention to detail – required.
  • Valid driver’s license – required.
  • Acceptable driving record – required.
  • Legal record that meets company standards – required.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
  • Walking, kneeling, standing, regularly lifting up to 75 pounds, stooping, crawling, climbing telephone poles, stairs, and ladders, sitting, driving.
  • Union position through Teamsters Local 20.
  • Regular shift: 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; overtime, holidays, weekends, nights as required.
  • Call‑out duty when necessary and assigned by the Customer Facing Supervisor.
  • Uniforms, tools, and personal equipment provided by the company.
  • Subject to random drug/alcohol screens, periodic driving record checks, and written approval upon request.
  • Compensation as defined in Appendix “C.”
