Job Description Summary

The Science Writing and Communications Program Coordinator translates research from the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SCTR) into engaging content suitable for diverse audiences, including scientific and laypersons, students, collaborators, and sponsors. SCTR, an NIH-funded statewide institute, offers expertise, resources, training, and funding to support research teams. Our mission is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical and public health practices to enhance community health across SC and beyond.

The coordinator reports to the SCTR Science Development Officer and is part of the SCTR Communications Team, which manages strategic communication initiatives. The role involves working in a dynamic, creative environment to bolster SCTR’s stakeholder relationships and reputation. We seek candidates with experience in science communication and digital media skills.

Responsibilities
  1. Content Creation (30%): Develop written and visual content for various channels, including websites, reports, newsletters, stories, news releases, blogs, and marketing materials. Engage with research staff to craft compelling narratives about their work and advise leadership on effective story framing. Coordinate reviews and track engagement metrics.
  2. Editing (20%): Edit communications for clarity, accuracy, and style. Provide editorial guidance on academic writing and suggest improvements for visual and textual content.
  3. Digital Media (20%): Use digital tools to promote content, develop graphics, and assist with website and newsletter updates.
  4. Manuscript and Grant Support (20%): Collaborate on manuscript and grant writing, offering editing, translation advice, and visual support to enhance scientific communication.
  5. Material and Report Preparation (5%): Create promotional materials, maintain tracking records, and assist with reporting strategies.
  6. Additional Activities (5%): Contribute to special projects related to science communication, including presentations, posters, and visual abstracts.
Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant program experience.

Preferred Skills
  • Degree in journalism, communications, English, or science with professional writing/editing experience.
  • Ability to simplify complex scientific information into engaging stories.
  • Strong storytelling, editing, and visual communication skills, including experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Independent and team work skills, good judgment, and stakeholder engagement experience.
  • Organizational and project management capabilities.
