Summary
  • The Unit Secretary is an integral member of the healthcare team who delivers quality care through collaboration and communication with team members. They work under the direct supervision of the nurse manager and the registered nurse to support the clerical and secretarial operations of the patient care unit. Responsibilities include managing clerical and information systems, receptionist duties, collection and reporting of patient data, and supporting organizational standards of care. The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in computer courses and medical terminology is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Answer telephones, relay messages, greet patients and visitors, and communicate with staff about patient needs.
  • Ensure patient paperwork, including consents and advance directives, is in order.
  • Support medication reconciliation and respond to patient call bells promptly.
  • Facilitate access through security systems and report malfunctions.
  • Assist in emergency situations, arrange patient transport, and handle mail and packages.
  • Order and maintain supplies, prepare patient charts, and support patient transitions and discharges.
  • Maintain patient identification and documentation accuracy.
  • Support patient satisfaction initiatives and communicate observations to healthcare team.
Credentials

High School Diploma or GED required; additional education or experience in medical terminology and computer skills preferred.
