Job summary

Inova Fairfax Hospital is seeking a Unit Secretary for the Overflow Unit in Falls Church, VA. This full-time 12-hour daytime role includes Monday–Friday shifts with every third weekend and rotating holidays, totaling 36 hours per week.

The position supports unit operations and patient records within a major hospital system on-site. Minimum qualifications include a High School diploma or GED; BLS certification if also a Clinical Technician.

Qualifications

• Education: High School or GED.
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) if also works as a Clinical Technician.
• Preferred: Healthcare experience and EPIC experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs clerical activities and unit-specific work to support efficient department operations.
• Maintains physician and lab databases; maintains forms and clerical supplies and ensures medical supplies on par levels.
• Attends staff and committee meetings and records minutes; prepares unit charges as needed.
• Provides support to protect confidential patient information; creates, maintains, and terminates patient charts per Medical Records guidelines; ensures chart integrity.
• Obtains and files test results, lab reports and treatment in charts; updates GECE/IDX with discharge time and moves to EDDIS timely; runs EPIC reports as requested.
• Assists with call bells and communicates patient needs to staff; triages and escalates issues to next provider if time exceeds 5 minutes.
• Facilitates patient movement into/out of unit; coordinates with nurses, transport and admissions regarding admissions/transfers; schedules tests and labs.
• Greets patients/families; provides non-clinical information; monitors access at nursing station; ensures desk coverage.
