Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a clerical and administrative support on a nursing unit. Under the Nursing Director, the role performs a variety of clerical duties, maintains patient records, and supports nursing staff and medical staff to improve unit operations.

The position requires computer systems proficiency, data entry, and accurate documentation of dietary and NPO restrictions. Duties include safety rounds, ensuring records accompany patients, and coordinating with departments on

Qualifications

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) and computer data entry skills.
  • Clerical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

  • Initiates and maintains patient records according to policy.
  • Demonstrates competence in use of current computer systems.
  • Posts diet restrictions and NPO restrictions on Lab work, etc.
  • Completes the following skills according to policy and procedures.
  • Keeps census up-to-date.
  • Identifies patient per hospital policy.
  • Ensures that patient’s medical record accompanies patient to ancillary departments.
  • Oversees prompt delivery of specimens to appropriate department.
  • Performs safety rounds at frequency determined by Nursing Director.
  • Ensures medical records & x-rays are copied for transfer to other facilities.

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Nursing Director, or his/her designee, performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties and services on nursing unit. Provides assistance for nursing personnel and medical staff to enhance the overall environment of the nursing unit. Performs other duties as assigned. Demonstrates working knowledge of all appropriate computer systems. RESPONSIBILITIES: Clerical & Administrative:
  • Performs a variety of clerical & administrative duties.
  • Records and types unit council minutes
  • Safety checks as designated by department director

Communication:
  • Greets all patients and visitors to the unit in a positive manner and directs to appropriate destination.
  • Demonstrates appropriate telephone etiquette.
  • Documents in a legible and concise manner.
  • Spells all words, terms correctly.
  • Documents allergies in accordance with policy.
  • Demonstrates competency with unit-specific equipment.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel and departments of patients transferred to a different room or received from another unit.
  • Assists others in orientation to clerical duties.
  • Communicates appropriate referral of issues or concerns to manager, director or designee in a timely manner.
  • Completes unit specific competencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma (or equivalent) and computer data entry skills.
  • Clerical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit for 3-7 hours, twist and bend frequently, standing, walking, squatting, kneeling are not essential functions. Must be able to lift 10-35 lbs with good body mechanics. May be left or right handed but able to pinch, deviate wrist frequently, and have fine motor skills. Near vision must be accurate at 20/20 and far vision accurate at 20/40, must be able to discriminate among red, green and white and have moderate depth perception. Must be able to hear whisper at 20 feet.

Pay Range:

$18.04-$28.46
