Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Unit Lieutenant to plan, coordinate, and direct the actions of security staff and oversee custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum security units.

This position requires completing eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training and meeting minimum qualifications, including a high school diploma and relevant experience, with possible substitutions for supervisory experience and degree requirements.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates count for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
• This position will be assigned as a Unit Lieutenant.

Education

Bachelor’s degree may substitute for required experience

Degree in Criminal Justice may substitute for supervisory experience
