Job description

Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing a safe and secure work environment for Nassau employees, building tenants, visitors, contractors, and the public, and for protecting Nassau ’s physical assets. This position supports the Manager with scheduling, training, inventory management and leads the department in the absence of the manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • General Supervision: Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day security operation. Will assume leadership of the department in the absence of the Manager. Ensures security officers follow company rules, regulations and policies. Can administer verbal counseling and direction to employees.
  • Training: With limited direction, lead and coordinate training including: initial training of all new officers, refresher training as needed, monthly review of standard operating procedures, safety and medical training, Active Shooter training and building evacuation. Assists Manager in planning and conducting staff quarterly training classes.
  • Communication: Meets with the Manager on a regular basis to discuss business goals and management objectives. Ensures security officers have been made aware of and follow new policies and instructions.
  • Inventory: Oversee Security department equipment inventory ensuring all items are accounted for and functioning.
  • Policy Development: Conducts monthly review of standard operating procedures and policies. Recommends updates and revisions to Security Manager. Ensures all new/revised policies are communicated to security officers and provides any associated training.
  • Scheduling: Conducts department scheduling, with direction from manager, ensuring all shifts are fully covered. Ensures overtime is kept to a minimum. Arranges coverage for unexpected shift vacancies (callouts etc.). Must be available to fill any posts as a last resort.

Will also perform the duties of a Corporate Security Officer including:

  • Control access in/out of Nassau facilities by checking employee, visitor, contractor and tenant I.D. Badges, monitoring sign-in sheets, issuing visitor ID badges, and operating the closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV).
  • Provide direction/assistance to visitors, employees, and tenants in a timely, professional and courteous manner.
  • Operate the computerized security, access control, and alarm systems. Secure interior/exterior doors. Activate/deactivate alarm systems when opening/closing building.
  • Operate and understand use of the security 2-way radios and public-address systems in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ensure building and occupant safety. Make interior and exterior tours of the buildings, parking garages, and grounds, checking for security and safety problems; resolving or reporting such findings as required.
  • Respond to and provide assistance in any security related incident (i.e. fire, accident, medical emergency, vandalism, alarms, injuries, power outages, suspicious persons or vehicles, natural disasters, etc.). Conduct initial and continuing investigations of incidents, submitting security incident reports as necessary.
  • Monitor and act upon building HVAC alarms, fire system alarms, and elevator alarms; providing necessary assistance and documentation.
  • Respond to and be knowledgeable of all emergency procedures (i.e. evacuation, fire, medical, bomb threat, workplace violence, etc.).
  • Handle incoming telephone calls and transfer calls as necessary.
  • Available for call-in; or in the event of an emergency extending past normal working hours, the ability to remain on the job until relieved.
  • Report all safety and security issues to the Corporate Security Manager
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance. Uniforms are to be cleaned, pressed and professionally worn at all times while on premises.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or equivalent / associate degree
  • Possess a valid State of Connecticut Security Officer Identification Card
  • Current or past CPR / AED / Basic First Aid Certification
  • Possess a demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and motivate a diverse group of individuals to achieve position goals.
  • 4-5 years of meaningful / verifiable employment in any of the following areas – 3 of which (minimum) in a supervisory capacity:

Law Enforcement

Military – Active Duty and Reserves

Fire Service

Emergency Medical Service

Emergency Management

  • Ability to interact with visitors, tenants, employees and the public, in a professional and courteous manner

  • Ability to learn and follow SOP manual and all emergency procedures (i.e. evacuation, fire, medical, bomb threat, workplace violence, etc.).
  • Must attend and successfully complete all required training
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with key management personnel, associates, subordinates and the general public.
  • Must possess basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
