Job summary

The Unit Counselor at Quality Inn’s Hylan Shelter in Long Island City provides care, socialization, crisis intervention, and facility monitoring across shelter programs. The role is onsite and requires a high school diploma and U.S.

work eligibility. Responsibilities include orienting new residents, communicating program processes, offering social support and transportation to appointments, assisting with meals, documenting interactions, and participating in trainings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Some experience in a human services setting.
• Must obtain a food handlers certificate within 45 days of hire (Hylan Shelter only).
• Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.

Responsibilities

• Participate in or conduct orientation for new residents.
• Communicate program processes and activities to residents.
• Provide social support and motivational interviewing interventions.
• Provide transportation for residents to appointments as needed.
• Assist with meal-related activities including warming, serving, and cleanup.
• Document neighborhood activities and resident interactions.
• Participate in crisis intervention as needed.
• Attend management, supervision, and required training meetings.
• Report serious incidents and complete required incident documentation.
• Conduct hourly rounds and ensure resident wellbeing.
• Arrive to work on time and as scheduled.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
