Description

Coordinates communication activities for the nursing unit and models exemplary performance standards of customer service for patients, families, and internal customers. Maintains patient care records and related documentation as determined by Health Information Management and Unit Support Services. Performs clerical duties for a specific unit, including receptionist responsibilities, to ensure the efficient operation of a Unit Communication Center.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Associate's Degree and/or some college (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year in a healthcare environment (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Computer knowledge and proficiency required.
  • Basic MS Word skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills required.
  • Legible handwriting and attention to detail.
  • Basic mathematics skills.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and diplomatically with all levels of staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations when needed.
  • Follow hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Remain on unit during shift, notifying staff when leaving for errands.
  • Use designated areas for breaks and leave patient care areas when shift ends.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work area and use downtime productively.

Functional Accountabilities

Communication Link between Patients/Families and Healthcare Staff

  • Greet patients, families, staff, and visitors warmly.
  • Communicate effectively, providing helpful and caring information, and follow up as needed.
  • Coordinate with staff for admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Answer calls professionally and relay messages accurately.
  • Maintain communication boards and follow visitor policies.

Operational Duties

  • Verify bed status, maintain census, and coordinate environmental needs.
  • Assist with patient satisfaction surveys and mail distribution.

Assisting with Patient Care-Related Activities

  • Answer call bells professionally.
  • Assist with patient/family orientation and supply requests.

Health Information Management

  • Fax orders, maintain downtime procedures, and prepare charts.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Maintains Unit Supplies and Equipment

  • Maintain supply levels, verify orders, and organize storage areas.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning and report issues promptly.

Safety

  • Promote safety and verify information for decision-making.
  • Address unsafe behaviors and practice clear communication.

  • Participate in training, meetings, and shared decision-making.
