St. Joseph Mercy Health in Ann Arbor is seeking a full-time Unit Clerk to provide clerical support on assigned nursing units.
You will handle patient registrations, admissions, discharges and transfers, reception duties, and coordinate non-clinical tasks to keep the unit running smoothly. The role requires a high school diploma and at least one year of healthcare or clerical experience, proficiency with EMR and Microsoft Office, and strong customer service skills.

Supports the patient experience and the culture of safety by providing equipment maintenance, stocking and ordering unit supplies, maintaining unit appearance and overall environment of care. Provides reception services to patients, families, visitors and other unit guests.

Coordinates non-clinical support functions for assigned nursing unit and assists in maintaining an orderly unit operation. Serves as liaison between nursing and ancillary departments for information or issue resolution. Communicates with Nurse Manager on outstanding interdepartmental issues and participates in a plan to resolve. Demonstrates unit/area designated competencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Answers the phones and triages communications to appropriate team members and patients using relevant technology. ,
Manages clerical component of patient information throughout the episode of care
Completes all necessary functions associated with patient admission, discharge and transfer.
Assembles and maintains patient medical records from admission through discharge.
Rounds regularly on all printers for maintenance. Distributes or files any printed information.
Performs any necessary scanning, faxing, copying and filing.
Prepares patient information for transfer to another health care facility.
Completes unit stocking which may include nurse servers, unit alcoves and linen closet. Checks and removes expired items.
Assists in maintaining the unit environment by cleaning and monitoring areas such as equipment storage areas , charting alcoves, workstations, visiting areas, and conference rooms. Submits work orders for repairs as needed.
Completes staffing and scheduling administrative functions as delegated by unit leadership.
Coordinates regular maintenance and repair of unit equipment such as:
Patient care equipment (thermometers, scales, beds, tables)
General use equipment such as ice machine, microwave, etc.
Computers, printers and other technology
Orders and maintains routine forms, and patient care supplies.
Arranges for transport of documents, specimens or equipment to appropriate destination.
Locates equipment, medical records or other items required to provide patient care.
Assists With Patient Care:
Answers patient call lights upon request and relays request to patient care staff member.
Functions as a companion for non-restrained patients when needed based on patient care requirements.
Completes additional duties as assigned
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
