Orange County Public Schools seeks a Security Officer to protect district facilities and ensure authorized access to RBELC, OTC, and other locations. You will engage with staff and visitors, perform inspections, and respond to incidents under district police guidance.
The role requires a high school diploma or GED and experience in security, with CPI/CPR training and a valid driver’s license. Background checks are required, and you may assist during emergencies as essential personnel.
The security officer job is a position within Safety and Security's OCPS District Police. Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to provide for the security and environmental safekeeping of the district's main centralized office locations owned and operated by the School Board of Orange County, specifically the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center (RBELC), Orlando Technical College (OTC), and other non-school district based sites. Employees in this classification are responsible for ensuring all persons entering the RBELC, OTC, or other non-school district based sites are authorized on the premises. Duties include effectively communicating with visitors to provide assistance and investigating activities in response to incidents, accidents, or unauthorized activities. Position addresses security violations in accordance with prescribed district policies and procedures and is responsible for reporting illegal activities to appropriate administration and/or law enforcement entities. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to district police direction. Performs related work as directed.

Performs security related duties as directed.
High school diploma or GED; three (3) years previous security, military, law enforcement, or correctional experience, with demonstrated investigative and interpersonal communication skills for addressing potentially hazardous circumstances; or any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions. Must possess strong interpersonal skills, good observation skills and judgement, and the ability to work with security, communications, and law enforcement team members. Requires successful completion and the ability to remain current in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), first aid and CPR training; requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license; requires the ability to obtain and remain up to date on mandated training classes required for the position; requires satisfactory district background investigation.
The incumbent is considered to be "essential personnel" during an emergency and can be subject to being held over or called back to a district location at all times.
Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data and/or information using established criteria. Includes exercise of discretion in determining actual or probable consequences, and in referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternatives.
Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
Requires the ability to operate standard radio communication equipment, standard office equipment, and assigned motorized security vehicle.
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to diverse populations often under difficult and stressful situations.
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution; to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgement concerning choices of action. Capable of making critical decisions during hazardous, potentially life threatening and stressful situations.

Some tasks may involve the ability to exert extremely heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 100 pounds, such as when transporting sick or injured persons.
Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds.
Tasks are regularly performed with some risk of exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, and violence.
