Markel Corporation in Glen Allen, Virginia seeks a Production Underwriter to join our underwriting team. This role handles day-to-day client servicing, renewals, and develops toward new business while supporting broker relationships and growth opportunities.

You will gather financial data, assess risk, document decisions, and maintain client files with a focus on accuracy, efficiency and superior service. AINS progression is encouraged and MS Word/Excel proficiency is expected.

Qualifications

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an integral member of the underwriting team fulfilling basic underwriting responsibilities. This position will handle day-to- day client servicing including underwriting issues and managing workflow to ensure the client has a superior experience. This role allows production underwriters to focus on broker relationships and business development. Position is responsible for underwriting less complex renewal business and develops into handling less complex new business. Supports attainment of written premium goals, loss ratio, and growth opportunities of team by providing backup to underwriters and superior customer service.Job ResponsibilitiesManage renewal business under the supervision of an Underwriter and move to writing new business - prepare analysis of exposure and present to Underwriter for signoff.Able to gather and review information on financial conditions, risk exposure, loss history, and economic trends that may impact the terms and conditions offered to the client.Able to extract internal data and research external information to identify trends impacting product line.Able to provide basic forms/coverage interpretations and advise on additional coverage needs, understand and evaluate exposures, and underwrite policy change requests.Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management system and adherence to documentation standards.Ensure accuracy of information inputted into all appropriate systems and verify that all necessary documentation is in the file.Establish, support, and maintain effective relationships and/or regular contact with clients and build strong relationships with employees across the organization.EducationBachelor’s degree preferred.Work Experience/Skill SetsExcellent oral and written communication and organizational skillsAbility to multi-task in fast-paced environment.Ability to work independently and within a team.Ability to follow process and attention to details.Willingness to work toward insurance designation (AINS)Intermediate level of proficiency in MS Word and Excel.1+ years of relevant work experience and educationUS Work AuthorizationUS Work Authorization required. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting.
