A leading company in the mortgage industry is seeking an Underwriting Manager to oversee underwriting policies and manage loan decisions. The role requires strong organizational skills and extensive experience in mortgage banking. This position offers opportunities for advancement and the flexibility of remote work.
Position Overview: The Underwriting Manager, reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, is responsible for implementing underwriting policies and standards, managing loan decisions, and ensuring compliance with investor guidelines. They evaluate applications, review loan conditions, enforce fraud detection, and assess risk factors to ensure the saleability of loans. They communicate decisions and foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Major Areas of Responsibility include: Updating and maintaining company manuals to ensure compliance; reviewing appraisals, title work, and purchase contracts; assessing credit risk; enforcing fraud detection; requesting additional information; recognizing risk factors; managing underwriting staff both internal and offshore; handling loan level exceptions.
Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Knowledge & Abilities): Experience in RTL and Non-QM Underwriting; strong organizational skills; understanding of mortgage documents; ability to evaluate conditions; knowledge of investor underwriting guidelines; income calculation expertise; familiarity with loan amount calculations; rental income analysis; ability to stay updated on Non-QM/RTL programs; following directives; analyzing financial data.
Experience and Education: 7+ years in mortgage banking and underwriting; processing 3-5 files daily; conditioning 4-6 files daily; full scope underwriting experience; management experience; Bachelor's degree; NMLS License.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform essential functions, including occasional standing, walking, sitting, manual dexterity, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, talking, hearing, tasting, smelling, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
Work Environment: Office setting, largely sedentary, computer use; optional remote work; exposure to weather conditions; potential business travel; moderate noise level. Remote work availability: Yes.
