Position Overview: Underwrites highly complex individual insurance applications for one or more products by evaluating the insurability of applicants within established guidelines. This includes complex case work such as large cases, business, charitable gifting, estate planning, and other advanced sales scenarios, as well as processing contract changes. Reviews risk factors, including medical and nonmedical history, financial requirements, occupational classes, and legal documents supporting the insurance applications. Makes final underwriting decisions within specified dollar limits and compliance policies. The approval limit for this position is ≤ $3,000,000-$5,000,000. Reviews Waiver and Disability Claims and Rescissions/Reformations.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Contributes to accurate and consistent risk selection and fraud detection.
2. Ensures high customer satisfaction by partnering with financial associates, team members, medical and legal consultants to determine the best outcomes for members.
3. Handles complex written and verbal communications, often influencing behavior.
4. Trains and mentors less experienced team members to enhance effectiveness and team performance.
5. Conducts quality audits on underwriters.
6. Creates content for field presentations and attends field meetings as needed.

The decision-making authority for this position can expose Thrivent Financial to risks up to $5 million per case. Decisions are case-specific and can be made independently up to the approval limit, potentially setting precedents for future decisions and impacting legal and compliance risks. Requires the ability to interpret various medical and financial records to inform judgments, demonstrating high-level decision-making skills. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability to fast-paced environments, and public speaking abilities are essential. Required Qualifications & Skills

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of holistic underwriting experience in the insurance industry.
• Strong customer and team focus.
• Broad understanding of Thrivent Financial and the financial services industry.
• Familiarity with reinsurance, contract law, and underwriting regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Progression or attainment of FLMI and/or FALU designations preferred.
