Job summary

Hamilton is seeking an experienced Underwriter, Professional Liability to join our team. This role focuses on E&O for lawyers, architects, engineers, and other professionals, with a base preference in Richmond, VA and a remote option for qualified candidates.

You will underwrite complex submissions, negotiate terms, and foster wholesale broker partnerships while contributing to profitability metrics. The ideal candidate has 2+ years of PLI underwriting experience, deep liability knowledge,

Qualifications

  • Two+ years of professional liability underwriting experience with underwriting authority.
  • Deep knowledge of professional liability and other liability lines.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Existing relationships with wholesale brokers preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with commensurate work experience considered.
  • RPLU designation or related industry coursework preferred.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

  • Assist in training and mentoring of less experienced employees.
  • Participate in special projects and corporate initiatives.

Job description

We’re looking for an Underwriter, Professional Liability.

Hamilton Select is looking for an experienced underwriter to join our Professional Liability team, underwriting E&O insurance for lawyers, architects & engineers, insurance agents, real estate agents/brokers, accountants, and a range of miscellaneous E&O accounts.

We prefer to base the position in Richmond, VA, but we will consider a remote working location for appropriately qualified candidates.

What you will do
  • Underwrite challenging and complex new and renewal submissions within underwriting guidelines and make sound risk decisions that balance our growth and profitability targets
  • Negotiate terms and conditions consistent with our coverage-focused underwriting strategies
  • Market our insurance products through various communications channels and occasional business travel
  • Develop mutually beneficial partnerships and nurture relationships with our appointed wholesale brokers
  • Monitor key metrics and ratios with an eye on efficiency and profitability
  • Assist in training and mentoring of less experienced employees
  • Participate in special projects and corporate initiatives
What you require for the role
  • Two or more years of Professional Liability underwriting experience with underwriting authority, preferably in Excess and Surplus (E&S) Lines
  • Deep technical knowledge of professional liability or products liability and other liability lines of insurance
  • Existing relationships within the wholesale broker community and the demonstrated ability to build effective relationships
  • Strong internal and external communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Keen attention to detail, sharp analytical competence, and advanced problem-solving skills
  • Acute focus on customer service to meet and exceed our best-in-class service aspirations
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required, with commensurate work experience considered
  • RPLU designation or other industry coursework preferred, but not required
  • Ability to travel from time to time to promote our corporate interests
