Qualifications

SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the Underwriter II will be responsible for evaluating, selecting, and pricing new and renewal business at a premium level based on company standards and within granted underwriting authority. An Underwriter at this level will be expected to apply knowledge of workers compensation rules and MEM guidelines, executing the prescribed MEM underwriting strategy to achieve company goals, while providing enhanced service to our customers. The person in this position is responsible for managing their individual assigned book of business. This role will interact with producers and internal departments to develop relationships that will generate profitable growth opportunities but also build a solid retention plan. This position is expected to serve as a role model to less experienced underwriters and underwriting assistants. May serve as both formal and informal mentor/coach of less experienced employees.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to MEM’s underwriting philosophy, rating methodology and guidelines.
  • Understands regulatory rules, policies, and procedures and effectively employs that knowledge in day-to-day work activities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic underwriting principles and risk characteristics by independently managing individual assigned book of business with minimal supervision.
  • Underwrite using established underwriting tools and processes including but not limited to:
    • Addressing the exposures faced by employees based on the insured’s operations
    • Completing loss analysis (including trend analysis) for individual risks as applicable
    • Utilizing Safety and Risk Services
    • Various analytical tools including predictive modeling and loss forecasting
  • Correspond with producers regarding the acceptance or rejection of coverage, endorsements to policies, rating, pricing, etc. or to obtain additional information to support sound underwriting decisions and applying appropriate workers compensation laws and rules.
  • Regular interaction, both in person and virtually with producers and policyholders to build and maintain business relationships as a trusted partner and consultant. Professionally communicate underwriting analysis, pricing decisions and underwriting actions.
  • As appropriate, review and refer business outside of your underwriting letter of authority.
  • Provide a high level of service to producers and policyholders by meeting required quality, time and compliance standards.
  • Exhibit an ethical manner of conduct, keeping sensitive information confidential.
  • Expected to participate in projects and committees, both within the underwriting department and other departments, to achieve company and departmental objectives. This could include formally presenting information to various groups.
  • The Underwriter II will occasionally be asked to serve as a mentor and technical resource for less experienced underwriters and review and approve underwriting decisions for those with less underwriting authority.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Insurance and Risk Management, or a directly related field, or the equivalent combination of education and Underwriting experience is required.

Designations/Certifications:

  • Insurance industry designations, certifications and coursework are highly encouraged. (Examples: RWCS, AINS, AU, CPCU)


Licenses

  • Current/Valid Driver’s License


Experience:

  • 3-5 years’ experience of general workers compensation and/or other insurance experience with emphasis in property and casualty experience is required.
