Job summary

Great American Insurance Group's Underwriter Development Program in Cincinnati, OH offers hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to multiple specialty lines. You will develop core underwriting skills and gain practical experience alongside experienced underwriters and leaders.

During seven weeks, you’ll participate in structured training and real-world projects, building a strong foundation for a career in commercial insurance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.2 GPA.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience through extracurricular activities, internships, co-ops, campus organizations, work experience, or community involvement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Interest in commercial insurance, underwriting, and continuous professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Use independent judgment to support business goals.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external partners.
  • Analyze coverage requests, limits, and exposures to determine underwriting terms.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, rating methodologies, and applicable laws/regulations.
  • Order and evaluate underwriting reports (MVRs, loss history, inspections).
  • Assess risk quality and compliance with guidelines; recommend loss prevention actions.
  • Price business in accordance with underwriting standards.
  • Develop relationships with customers, agents, and colleagues.
  • Complete assigned training, education, and professional development activities.

Through hands-on learning, mentorship and exposure to multiple areas of the business, you'll develop the skills and experience needed to thrive as a commercial insurance underwriter.

During the seven-week Underwriter Development Program, you’ll develop the fundamental skills and knowledge required of a commercial insurance underwriter while working closely with experienced underwriters, managers and business leaders.

Through structured training, real-world experience and ongoing mentorship, you'll strengthen your technical, analytical and leadership skills while gaining exposure to a variety of specialty insurance products and business risks.

A strong commitment to learning and professional growth is essential, as you’ll continually expand their industry knowledge and adapt to the evolving insurance marketplace.

The program starts in June 2027 and is based in our downtown Cincinnati, OH headquarters.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, agents, and colleagues.
  • Complete assigned training, education, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
