Job summary

Great American Insurance Group in Cincinnati, OH offers an Underwriter Development Program designed to train future commercial insurance underwriters. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to underwriting, claims, operations, and product management, you’ll build the skills for a successful underwriting career.

During seven weeks, you’ll develop fundamental underwriting knowledge while working with experienced underwriters and leaders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.2 GPA.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience through extracurricular activities, internships, co-ops, campus organizations, work experience, or community involvement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and analytical abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Use independent judgment to support business goals.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external partners.
  • Analyze coverage requests, limits, and exposures to determine underwriting terms.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, rating methodologies, and insurance laws/regulations.
  • Order and evaluate underwriting reports ( motor vehicle records, loss history, inspections, etc.).
  • Assess risk quality and compliance with guidelines; recommend loss prevention actions.
  • Price business according to underwriting standards.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers, agents, and colleagues.
  • Complete assigned training and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

During the seven-week Underwriter Development Program, you’ll develop the fundamental skills and knowledge required of a commercial insurance underwriter while working closely with experienced underwriters, managers and business leaders. Through structured training, real-world experience and ongoing mentorship, you'll strengthen your technical, analytical and leadership skills while gaining exposure to a variety of specialty insurance products and business risks.

A strong commitment to learning and professional growth is essential, as you’ll continually expand their industry knowledge and adapt to the evolving insurance marketplace.

The program starts in June 2027 and is based in our downtown Cincinnati, OH headquarters.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
