Job summary

Great American Insurance Group is hiring for the Underwriter Development Program in Cincinnati, OH. This seven-week, hands-on learning program develops skills across underwriting, claims, operations, and product management under mentorship from experienced professionals.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree and a minimum 3.2 GPA, plus demonstrated leadership and strong communication and analytical abilities.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience through extracurricular activities, internships, co-ops, campus organizations, work experience, or community involvement.

  • Interest in commercial insurance, underwriting, and continuous professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external partners.
  • Analyze coverage requests, limits, and exposures to determine underwriting terms.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, rating methodologies, and applicable insurance laws and regulations.
  • Order and evaluate underwriting reports, including motor vehicle records, loss history reports, inspections, and loss control assessments.
  • Assess risk quality and compliance with company guidelines and recommend appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Price business in accordance with company underwriting standards.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, agents and colleagues.
  • Complete assigned training, education, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

During the seven‑week Underwriter Development Program, you’ll develop the fundamental skills and knowledge required of a commercial insurance underwriter while working closely with experienced underwriters, managers and business leaders. Through structured training, real‑world experience and ongoing mentorship, you'll strengthen your technical, analytical and leadership skills while gaining exposure to a variety of specialty insurance products and business risks. A strong commitment to learning and professional growth is essential, as you’ll continually expand their industry knowledge and adapt to the evolving insurance marketplace.

The program starts in June 2027 and is based in our downtown Cincinnati, OH headquarters.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
